All my successful illustrator friends also have a strong handle on design as well - you need to be able to envision your illustration working along side design.Īt the end of the day you need to evaluate your skills from a totally objective level. Get good at design so you can brand/market yourself. Git gud at digital illustration - or at least being comfortable with digital art tech and delivering illustrations via the web, no one wants to deal with canvases being mailed and some print portfolio. A lot of illustrators will eventually find representation - by having an agent your work will be submitted to clients and you may get selected that way - typically agents want a strong style in place before they work with you. Talk to people at your college, do they have any job placement or help with internships - you may have to work jobs in the creative field that are not illustration for now.
